Coexisting with wildlife

Research investigation

How could geckos and bats share a home’s surroundings while living spaces stay hygienic?

A worldwide tropical inquiry, with Cañas as a public starting point. Nothing here has been field tested.

  1. Idea or practice
Geckos: external, sealed-off refuges on outer walls, separate from indoor rooms, as a design hypothesis.
    What sources support
No source here verifies gecko refuges as an architectural intervention.
    What remains unknown
Which native species are present, and whether refuges help them, is unknown.
  2. Idea or practice
Bats: Merlin Tuttle’s Bat Conservation explains how quality bat houses are built and where they are placed.
    What sources support
Its guidance comes largely from North American, temperate experience.
    What remains unknown
Tropical species, overheating, roost hygiene and collecting droppings away from eating, sleeping and water collection need species-specific advice.
  3. Idea or practice
Bats eat many insects, but they are not a proven mosquito control.
    What sources support
Merlin Tuttle’s page on bats and mosquitoes discusses insect predation and the harm pesticides do to predators.
    What remains unknown
Whether local bats would reduce mosquitoes here is unknown and should not be assumed.

A question to test in Cañas

Which native gecko and bat species already use nearby buildings, and where do their droppings fall?

Where to next?

Mosquito evidence is reviewed separately, with its own sources and limits.

Research investigation

Could native planting support insect-eating birds without overstating what they do?

A worldwide tropical inquiry, with Cañas as a public starting point. Nothing here has been field tested.

  1. Idea or practice
Flycatchers, kingbirds, kiskadees, swallows and wrens may live nearby. Native canopy, shrubs and groundcover would be restored first, before any engineered nest aids.
    What sources support
No source has yet been reviewed for this investigation.
    What remains unknown
Which species are actually present, the local insect load and the food web still need surveying.
  2. Idea or practice
Safe windows, shielded lighting and nest sites kept away from doors, food and water, with droppings cleaned regularly.
    What sources support
This is a design idea awaiting evidence.
    What remains unknown
Supporting insect-eating birds does not establish mosquito control or dengue prevention.

A question to test in Cañas

Could seasonal bird and insect counts around restored and unrestored plots show which species benefit?

Where to next?

Bird habitat is not mosquito control; that evidence is kept separate.
